Assessment & Timeline

Hume Coal proposes the development of an underground mine to extract metallurgical (coking) coal and industrial (thermal) coal. The primary product will be a metallurgical coal, which is an essential raw material in the steel manufacturing process, and the industrial product used in both cement production and power generation.

Any development that is a state significant development is identified in the State and Regional Development State Environmental Planning Policy (SEPP). Under this SEPP mining and extraction operations are identified as State Significant Developments (SSD).

The Hume Coal Project requires approval under Part 4, Division 4.1 of the NSW Environmental Planning and Assessment Act 1979 (EP&A Act). As part of the approval process the company must prepare an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS).

The Hume Coal project and Berrima Rail project environmental impact statement were placed on public exhibition on 30 March 2017, for 90 days. Submissions have now closed however the full document can still be viewed and downloaded here.

All documents lodged with the NSW Planning Department in relation to the Hume Coal and Berrima Rail projects can be viewed on NSW Major Projects Website
