FAQ's
When will mining commence?
There is a thorough exploration, environmental assessment and approvals process that must be undertaken before any mining activity can commence.
If a project proceeds, typically the time between the start of exploration and mining can take a couple of years, but there are many factors that may influence that timeframe.
What type of coal mine is Hume Coal proposing?
It is too early to say what the detailed mining plan will eventually look like. Until information is gathered from exploration activities Hume Coal is not in a position to know if mining activities are feasible and what form of mining would be appropriate.
All options will be assessed based on the results of exploration and environmental investigations. Whatever the mining method that may eventually be presented for approval, Hume Coal undertake that it will be the best mine plan that can balance environmental, social and economic factors.
Will mining impact the aquifers in the Southern Highlands?
The protection of aquifers will be a primary consideration of any project planning undertaken for this site. Detailed hydrological and geological studies by recognised experts will guide the planning of any proposal to ensure that these important environmental features are protected.
How will Hume Coal determine if the Project is viable?
Hume Coal will base its decision on a number of factors including how much coal is present in the lease area, the cost of extracting the coal and whether the appropriate standards of environmental safeguards can be met.
Can the mine be approved without community approval?
Mining approval rests with the relevant planning authority as determined by the NSW Government. The views of the community are considered as part of that process.
